It
took a personal crisis for Michael Wells to truly learn
to appreciate life. He learned how through the eyes of
his children.
“About five years ago when I lost my business, I
hit rock bottom,” he said in an interview by e-mail.
“I was 48. For the first time in my life I was
unemployed. The only thing that saved me from jumping
off a bridge was my kids and family.”
After
four months, Wells found a job. Every day, when he
came home, his two children swarmed around him to ask
how his day had been. They asked a hundred questions
and gave him a million kisses and Wells came to realize
his work wasn’t as important as his place in his family.
“At the end, I realized that they were my parachute
sent from heaven,” he said, “and that my
heart needed now to talk. So, I began to write and write
until I had my book.”
The
book is called, “Snapshots of Heaven,” 40
funny, profound, real-life stories about children. He
calls the book a wake-up call to cherish the children
in our midst. The children he cherishes most are his son
Jeremy, now 16, and his daughter Jenna, 14. He writes
of being a new dad, of the best sound in the world, the
soccer star and goodnight kisses. He writes of special
occasions in stories titled, “Ruby Slippers, “
“Love Letters 101,” and “The Jewish
Santa.”
After
each section of stories, he encourages the reader to write
his own story of some cherished moment with a child. To

Wells hopes to collect a million stories. The book is
available via the Web site or at amazon.com.
“The
magic of children is their ability to bring us back, way
back to when we were like them and we were free,”
he said. From his children, he says he has learned that
heaven exists on earth, if you take the time to see, hear
and feel. “Without the magic of my kids’ smiles,
and the thrill of their laughter, there could be no heaven.”
He’s
learned to never take anything for granted, for you likely
will not have another chance. He’s learned you can
overcome anything with love. He believes sharing those
lessons through the stories in his book might help other
stressed-out parents who are trapped by life’s day-to-day
mundane annoyances and can’t see the bigger picture.
He says it is never too late to start savoring the lessons
children teach.
“Take
an inspiration from any one of my 40 stories and write
your own. Or, if you scrapbook, write a few lines next
to the photos.”
He believes there is a growing tend in America where
families want to write, not just take pictures of family
events. He’s working on other books, too, including, “Snapshots
of Heaven for Grandparents,” and “Snapshots
of Heaven for Dogs.” Wells is an author and entrepreneur
who says his driving ambition is to encourage and motivate
adults everywhere to tell their stories of the little
ones who “show them heaven before their time.”
He lives in Montreal, Canada.
